Local swim school, Aqualife Swimming have been training a cohort of young people through their Instructor Training Program. Hear from Penny Tuckfield, the founder of Aqualife…

Over the past year we have been honoured to train a cohort of young people through our Instructor Training Program. These teachers were originally Aqualife swimmers – some of who started with us aged 5 years right at the start of Aqualife. As they transitioned into Year 10 and above, they came to us to complete their Skills and Volunteer elements of the Duke of Edinburgh Program. A wonderful group of them then stayed on to become full time assistants and last year they all qualified as full trained STA Swimming Teachers, giving them an International qualification for life. We couldn’t be prouder of them and seeing the “Aqualife” ethos come full circle has been the highlight of our year. They are all amazing additions to our team.

The journey for them, being their first job as well as training as Swimming Teachers, has given them a wide skill set that has not only given them confidence in themselves but transferrable skills into whatever they choose to do with their lives going forwards. Alongside the actual understanding and delivery of teaching swimming, they have obtained knowledge about customer service, brand awareness, team building and communication. As they transition next year to university they now have the opportunity to support themselves with a well paid part-time job and real depth of skill qualities for their CV going forward.
We are now looking for our next in-take of assistants to follow in their footsteps!
What we are looking for:
- Year 12 or above (already 16 years of age)
- Candidates with a passion for aquatics and teaching swimming
- Good communicators and dedication
- Available to work September to December 2025 term as a paid Swimming Assistant, at least one session per week
- Available to undertake fully paid STA Swim Teacher Training – January/February 2026
- Available to commit to one year teaching (term time only) Summer 2026 through to Summer 2027 terms (6 hours minimum per week)
