THE HANDWRITING TUTOR KENT
I am an experienced fully qualified teacher specialising in tutoring handwriting. My aim is to transform untidy writing into legible, neat and joined-up / cursive handwriting. With a focused and simplified approach, this key literacy skill can be achieved within 10-12 sessions.
This targeted intervention allows children to attain quickly the National Curricular requirements for their year group. I assess the child’s writing during the first lesson highlighting areas that require improvement. The children are taught in a motivating and encouraging environment. Each session will reinforce writing skills, focusing on speed, spelling and presentation. This will ultimately result in an increased confidence in schoolwork, homework, tests and examinations.
Poor handwriting can occur due to insufficient time at school being spent teaching the key skills. Children need time to grasp and consolidate each stage. I have also helped many children with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism and cerebral palsy. The ability for children to be able to write with ease and speed is of prime importance allowing them to focus their attention on the content of the subject thereby fulfilling their potential.
Suitable for all age groups. I work in partnership with parents, giving feedback after each lesson. Specific guidance is given to ensure the child consolidates progress by practising between lessons resulting in speedy progress.

Elaine has worked magic with my sons handwriting! I have tried everything I could over the years, special pens, grips, books with grooves in that you’re supposed to write in, practice boards, dotted letter guides… We spent so many hours and so much money trying to help him, but nothing worked. We were getting very worried because the handwriting was hindering his ability to keep up at school and was affecting his marks too. I saw someone mention Elaine on Facebook and I’m eternally grateful to her! His handwriting has improved so much that it’s better than mine now! He absolutely loved his lessons with her and was always willing to do some homework to show her the next week. Her firm but kind approach is perfect to help and support children who are struggling in this area, and we felt she gave him expert one-on-one attention.

A Huge Improvement in My Son’s Handwriting!
Elaine made a real difference to my son’s handwriting and was incredibly supportive throughout. Before working with her, his teachers had said that although his ideas were good, his handwriting was sometimes difficult to read and was holding him back.
At first, he found learning joined-up writing quite challenging, but Elaine was very patient and encouraging. Over time, his handwriting improved noticeably, along with his confidence. By the end of his tuition, his form tutor commented on how much his handwriting had improved, and he even received Star of the Week at school because of the progress he’d made.
My son also really enjoyed the lessons. Elaine is such a lovely, warm, upbeat person and a wonderful teacher. He enjoyed the lessons so much, he still asks to go back now!
Elaine completely transformed our daughter’s handwriting and her confidence. She had been struggling through school with handwriting that was slow and not legible. By Year 4 it had become a real issue because she was not able to get her ideas onto paper.

One of my sons was really struggling with his writing, with a big regression in Year 4. Someone recommended Elaine to me and mentioned how she’d helped with her daughter’s work. I hadn’t heard of handwriting tuition before, but we were keen to try something as my son was rock bottom in confidence and he was refusing to write anything and school were moving him onto laptop support (we’d tried the special pens, the grips, the funky finger exercises, you name it!).
Elaine has such a warm and encouraging personality and was a breath of fresh air for my son to try again and, over time, to take pride in his writing. He went from refusing to write his name in birthday cards to writing little stories around the house for us to find!
Following this, my second son enrolled with Elaine, to support him with his hand grip. His writing is legible but he holds the pen in a fist grip, which limits his dexterity and the speed at which he can write. He had refused support from all other sources, getting incredibly emotional and self-conscious, but he was willing to work with Elaine to practise holding his pen differently, which showed a level of trust to be calm and receptive to her advice.
We are so grateful for Elaine’s support: she is so encouraging to help the children build up confidence and pride in their work. Having someone who is specialised in this area and who can work with your child in a small setting works absolute wonders. Thank you, Elaine!
We’ve seen an amazing transformation in our son’s handwriting after attending Elaine’s sessions. The neatness and legibility has hugely improved as well as his speed of writing and ability to write more for longer periods. My son Edward aged nine and three quarters, a year ago had undecipherable handwriting. Much like my own. Legible handwriting is an essential skill as important now as 50 years ago. Up there with oxygen, being able to speak, hunt and light a fire, and a ‘tin opener’ to future exam success.
His original primary school were not particularly interested or supportive – why is that a surprise today? We knew this was a problem, that it would require extra support, but we did not know where to turn.
Being based in East Kent, and geographically closer to France than London, we found Elaine by chance. We never looked back. Over a year, probably just 30 sessions, 170 hours of driving, 30 cardboard pub dinners, two tyre punctures, a few tears over handwriting practice and several pencils later, Elaine has transformed Edward’s handwriting from abysmal to amazing.
If you are reading this not knowing where to turn or what to do, you need look no further. Elaine has been extremely supportive, calm, but firm. Edward has worked hard and thrived both at the sessions and through practice because of Elaine’s nature. It was not always easy, but Elaine nurtured and unpicked the barriers, and the end result is fantastic. Every school needs an Elaine. We are extremely grateful for all that has been achieved and thoroughly recommend Elaine.
Elaine has worked wonders with my son over the past few weeks. At primary school, it was decided that they wouldn’t teach children how to write cursively, that and the Covid-year gaps resulted in painful, slow handwriting and with his exams looming, I knew it would benefit him to get his handwriting flowing more quickly and without pain. Having never been corrected for his grip, the benefits with Elaine’s back-to-basics teaching were evident from the beginning. He then worked through Elaine’s methodical workbooks with her gently correcting and encouraging him to progress to fully cursive and beautiful handwriting. Thank you, Elaine – we are over the moon.
Our daughter is dyslexic and has struggled with handwriting, but thanks to the wonderful Elaine we have seen an incredible transformation. She was endlessly patient, warm and encouraging, always taking the time to make sure our daughter feels save, valued and capable. The progress has been fantastic and we are so thankful for the care, professionalism and genuine kindness she showed throughout. She has such a natural way with children, drawing on her experience in the teaching profession to build their confidence and bring them on from strength to strength.
