At Somerhill, we believe that our unique structure provides an outstanding education in a happy, nurturing environment. We are confident in our belief that girls and boys learn in different ways which is why they go into our single gender prep sections. However, we also believe that they should socialise, play and develop together outside of the classroom and not live in isolation from each other.
In the Pre-Prep the children can join us at 2.5 years old and they spend time and make friends in this co-educational setting until the end of Year 2 (at 7 years old).
As boys and girls move into Year 3 they are taught academic lessons separately as Yardley Court (boys) or Derwent Lodge (girls) classes, but the boys and girls move around school together every day and enjoy coming together at break times, lunch, orchestra, clubs and in many sporting events.
Innovation and challenge is at the core of all we do at Somerhill. It is evident in all our outdoor learning opportunities, early years creative curriculum and in our prep school skilled based learning approach. We offer the PSB (Prep School Baccalaureate) for year 7-8 boys and we are one of only two prep schools in England to have put ‘Engineering’ on the curriculum, pulling together many skill sets and covering projects such as rocket cars, full size catapults, robots, electronics, and a bridge building challenge.
